Zhilina

Žilina (Slovak. Žilina) is a city in the northwestern part of Slovakia, which is simultaneously the center of Žilina Region and Žilina County. A city with a population of more than 85 thousand people, located in the valley of the Vag River. Žilina is one of the oldest cities in Slovakia. An ancient Slavic settlement existed on this place since the 6th century. In 1321, King Karois-Robert I of Hungary granted town rights to Žilina, and at the beginning of the 14th century the city was settled by German colonists. During the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648), Zhilina was occupied by the Gooses and for 5 years the city was the center of the ecclesiastical and religious movement of the Reformation. At the end of the 17th century, Jesuits settled in Zhilin, who were actively engaged in education, as well as the construction of schools and monasteries. In October 1938, the First Slovak Government was formed in the city. Today Žilina is the fifth largest settlement in Slovakia. The city is a powerful tourist and scientific and educational center of the country. One of the most prominent architectural monuments of Zhilina is the clock tower with chimes of 1889, not far from which a monument to A. Glintsi is the organizer and leader of the Slovak People's Party. The road from the monument leads to the square. Marianske, on both sides of which there are 44 Burgher houses of the 16th century. The most prominent attraction of the square is the Cathedral of St. Paul with two bell towers (1743 p.) made in the Baroque style. Near the cathedral was built a Jesuit monastery, in the church of which there is now a branch of the Považská Gallery, where there is a collection of works by Slovak artists.
