Tartu (historically known as Derpat or Yuriev) is the second largest city in Estonia with a population of 100,000. It is the oldest city in Estonia, founded in 1030. Its ancient name “Tarbat” was shortened to “Tartu” in Estonian and to “Derpat” in German. Despite the fact that much of the city was destroyed during World War II, Tartu still has a charming Old Town surrounded by large parks. The city is 185 km southeast of Tallinn, the capital of Estonia and is ideal for a day trip. Urban architecture is represented by Gothic, classic and modern. The monumental ruins of the once grandiose Tartu Cathedral, the city hall, the medieval church of St. John, the scientific center of AHHAA, a huge complex of university buildings - this is just an incomplete list of attractions that every guest of Tartu should see.
