Kaunas is the second largest city in Lithuania after Vilnius and an important center of Lithuanian economic, scientific and cultural life. The city is famous for its interwar architecture, was awarded the mark of European Heritage and on its way to UNESCO. Kaunas is the only city in the world where so many styles of buildings have survived to this day. The city consists of 2 very different parts - the Old and the New Town, built in the 19th century east of the Old Town. The old town is quiet, cozy, medieval. The streets of the Old Town have been turned into pedestrian sidewalks, so it is best to explore this place on foot. The landmark sites of the Old Town are Kaunas Castle, Town Hall and the historic Presidential Palace. The new city is a popular place among young people, its axis is Laisves alley (Liberty Alley). Most of the museums and restaurants are located here. The sights of the New Town are the Military Museum, the Museum. Churllonis, Choral Synagogue, Church of Michael the Archangel, Zhalyakalnis funicular and others.
