The date of foundation of the city is unknown. The first mention of the settlement of Ploskyry dates back to 1431. During its long history, the city was part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Russia, the Commonwealth, the Ottoman and Russian empires. During his stay in the latter, its name changed to Proskuriv. During the Liberation Competition, the government of the UPR and the Directory repeatedly visited Proskurov. In 1954, the city received its modern name, in honor of the outstanding Ukrainian hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky. There are many interesting sights in the city that are worth seeing. The route includes the botanical garden of KhNU, the regional philharmonic, the Holy Intercession Cathedral, the house of the Zhuravlevs and the Independence Square.
