Riga is the financial, creative and cultural center of Latvia. It is the capital and largest city of Latvia, as well as the largest city in the Baltic States. Riga is located on the shore of the Gulf of Riga, at the mouth of the Daugava. Throughout history, the city has been part of many empires, each of which has left its mark on the city. It is famous for its Art Nouveau style and wooden architecture. The historical center of Riga is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. For tourists, the most interesting is the Old Town area, where the main attractions of Riga are concentrated: Riga Cathedral, Ratslaukums Square, Blackheads House, St. Peter's Church, St. John's Church, Cat House, Three Brothers and others. Further from the Old Town district is the modern center of Riga. In addition to the Freedom Monument, here you can admire the Art Nouveau houses on Albert Street and other adjacent streets — one of the densest clusters of architecture of this style in the world.
