Bratislava is a very cozy medieval town with narrow winding streets, a hilltop castle near the Danube River and many historic churches and buildings worth visiting. In the center of the old town there are two squares: Hlavne namestie (main square) and Hviezdoslavovo namestie (Hviezdoslav Square, named after the famous Slovak poet). The historic center is characterized by many baroque palaces. The Grassalkovic Palace, built around 1760, is now the residence of the President of Slovakia, and the Slovak government now has its residence in the former Archbishop's Palace. Notable cathedrals and churches include the Gothic St. Martin Cathedral, built in the 13th and 16th centuries, which served as the coronation church of the Kingdom of Hungary between 1563 and 1830. The Franciscan Church of the XIII century was the site of knightly ceremonies and is the oldest sacred building in the city that has survived. The Church of St. Elizabeth, better known as the Blue Church because of its color, is built entirely in the style of Hungarian Secessionism. One of the most outstanding buildings of the city is Bratislava Castle, located on a plateau at an altitude of 85 meters above the Danube. From there you have incredible views of the city and its surroundings.
