The present city of Florence was established by Julius Caesar in 59 BC as a settlement for his veteran soldiers and was named originally Fluentia, owing to the fact that it was built between two rivers, which was later changed to Florentia ("flowering"). In centuries to come, the city became an important commercial centre. Florence was also the home to powerful families and creative geniuses who left their legacies in the city's many museums and art galleries. The historic centre of Florence attracts millions of tourists each year and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1982. The route "The Best of Florence" proposes fascinating walking around the city, where you can explore the most popular landmarks as well as hidden, but still impressive sights.
