The history of Lutsk is about a thousand years old. At one period of time, it was the capital of the Galicia-Volyn principality and the residence of Grand Duke Lubart, who built the famous Lutsk Castle. For a long time, the city was an important center of Volyn. For some time, the Kosach family lived in the city with their daughter, now known as Lesya Ukrainka.
