Burgos breathes restrained Castilian nobility: the Arlansons river, stone bridges, cozy squares and proud spires on the horizon. The city was the capital of Castile and lies on the Way of St. James; its cathedral is a World Heritage Site. The route “Lace of Stone: Burgos” will take you from royal stories to a leisurely walk along the water.
We start near the monastery of Santa Maria la Real de las Huelgas - here the kings rest, and rare medieval fabrics are stored in the treasury. After a block of Abadengo, we exit to the Island Park, where it is easy to adjust to the pace of the route. Next is the ascent to the observation deck and Burgos Castle: in front of you the whole valley and the spires of the cathedral.
We go down to the Caja de Burgos Art Center and from there to the Cathedral of St. Mary. Under the Arch of St. Mary we cross the St. Mary's Bridge to the Plaza Mayor, where the urban rhythm lives. Nearby are the Sid Monument and the Border House, which hosted the sailor Columbus.
The finish is the Carthusian monastery of Miraflores with an elegant royal tomb. The route is convenient and busy, without haste: a few hours — and you will feel Burgos for real.
