Salamanca — warm in shade, hospitable to the eye, cozy for leisurely walks. Its golden building block makes photos bright even on a cloudy day.
The route “Salamanca: the soul of Castile” starts near the Monterrey Palace; the first stop is at Café Novelty, where it is nice to plan further stops. Next is Plaza Mayor, the heart of the city with arcades that keep the rhythm of daily meetings. Ahead are the Clavero Tower and the Monastery of Saint-Esteban, and on Company Street it is worth climbing the tower of the Cleresia Scala Coeli: from above you can see the lace of roofs and courtyards.
The University of Salamanca for more than eight centuries is one of the oldest educational institutions in Europe. On its facade, everyone is looking for a tiny frog: they say who will find it, so be talented in science. Nearby are the Patio of Small Schools and the Salamanca Museum.
The final of the itinerary is between the New Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary and the garden of Calisto and Melibea. On the portal of the cathedral hid a funny figure of “astronaut” - a modern touch of restorers. A few more steps — and you're at the Cassa Lis and the Roman bridge over the Tormes; a stone verraco-bull runs around it, like a friendly watchman.
The route is easy, with delicious pauses and wonderful views. Wear comfortable shoes - and Salamanca will sincerely thank you.
