Welcome to Cadiz, one of the oldest cities in Europe, which is older than Rome.
It is more than 3000 years old, and every quarter here reminds of the Phoenicians, the Romans and the golden age of Spanish sailors. Cadiz is compact, sunny and has a unique sense of freedom that can not be confused with anything.
Today you will find a rich route from 15 locations, and here are three that immediately set the mood of the day:
• Torre Tavira is the highest historical point of Cadiz, offering 360° views.
• Catedral de Cádiz — a grand “white and gold” basilica, a symbol of the city.
Teatro Romano de Cádiz is one of the oldest Roman theatres in Spain.
But the trick is not only in the height — inside works the “Cámara Oscura”, an optical mechanism that shows the living city on a huge circular screen in real time. Not video, not photo — direct reflection of the city through a system of mirrors and lenses, like the real magic of the 18th century. This is one of those experiences after which you understand Cadiz not just with your eyes, but intuitively.
Interesting little-known fact
In the center of Cadiz there is an area where houses are built so close that neighbors used to pass things to each other from window to window... without leaving the house. Locals joke that it was Spain's first “delivery service”.
Have a nice day — acquaintance with Cadiz is just beginning.
