A data da fundação da cidade é desconhecida. A primeira menção ao assentamento de Ploskyriv remonta a 1431. Durante sua longa história, a cidade fez parte do Grão-Ducado da Lituânia e da Rússia, da República Popular da Polônia, dos Impérios Otomano e Russo. Durante sua estada como parte deste último, seu nome mudou para Proskurov. Durante as competições de libertação, o governo da UNR e a Diretoria foram repetidamente localizados em Proskurov. Em 1954, a cidade recebeu seu nome moderno, em homenagem ao notável hetman ucraniano Bohdan Khmelnytsky. Há muitos pontos turísticos interessantes na cidade que valem a pena visitar. A rota inclui o jardim botânico de KHNU, a filarmônica regional, a Catedral de São Pokrovsky, a casa dos Zhuravlovs e a Praça da Independência.
