Welcome to the first day of your Reykjavik trip!
Reykjavik is one of the smallest capitals in Europe, but it is here that Iceland's modern cultural scene takes shape. The city is known for its concert halls, design, independent coffee houses and unusual architecture inspired by the nature of the island. Reykjavik has almost no classic skyscrapers — instead the city grows horizontally, leaving plenty of room for light, ocean and mountains on the horizon.
Today will be:
• Gatlgrimskirkʼya is the main symbol of Reykjavik, whose architecture is inspired by the basalt columns and volcanic landscapes of Iceland.
• Harpa Concert Hall is one of the most famous modern buildings in the country with a glass facade that changes its appearance depending on the light and weather.
• Sun Voyager is a legendary sculpture by the ocean that symbolizes travel, freedom and the discovery of new horizons.
Interesting fact:
In Iceland, there are practically no surnames in the usual format for most countries. Instead, use patronymics — the name of the father or mother with the addition of “-son” or “-dóttir”. Therefore, even in phone books, people are sorted by names, not by surnames.
Have a good first day in Reykjavik! ☺️
