A história de Lutsk remonta a cerca de mil anos. Houve uma época em que foi a capital do principado galego-Volyn e a residência do Grão-Duque Lubart, que construiu o famoso Castelo de Lutsk. Durante muito tempo, a cidade foi um importante centro de Volyn. Por algum tempo, a família Kosachev morou na cidade com a filha, agora conhecida como Lesya Ukrainka.
