Lagos is a port city of the Algarve with the warm breath of the Atlantic: narrow streets, white houses, ceramic tiles, the smell of fresh fish and a leisurely rhythm. The route “Lagush: the city of seafarers” leads from wild cliffs and lighthouse to cozy beaches, through observation decks, an old fortress and lively squares, and ends at the marina with yachts and coffee on the waterfront.
Three stops that fall in love:
- Ponta da Piedade. Honeycombs, arches and grottoes form a natural amphitheater for waves. Nearby is the Ponta da Piedade Lighthouse, which since the beginning of the twentieth century reliably shines for ships.
- Camilo Beach. A wooden staircase descends to the emerald water, and a short tunnel has been cut into the rock that connects the two bays - a little adventure already on the shore.
- The old slave market. Today it is a chamber museum of memory; in the middle of the fifteenth century, the first trade of enslaved people in Europe took place here — an important, if not easy, page in the history of the city.
Interesting fact: from Lagos came the navigator Gilles Eanish, who in the fifteenth century first crossed Cape Bohador and opened the way for the Portuguese along western Africa.
Guide to the road: one day — and you will feel why Lagush remains so easily in your heart.
