Faro is the cozy capital of the Algarve, where the white stones of the old streets bask in the sun, and the salty wind from the Ria Formosa lagoon brings the smell of the sea and oranges. Our walking route “Faro: History, Sea and Sun” leads from quiet hills to the water surface, combining ancient gates, monastery courtyards and a promenade with yachts.
The most striking stops:
- Cathedral Church of Faro: climb the tower - from here you can see the islets of the lagoon and the tiled roofs; inside are preserved a magnificent organ of the eighteenth century and carved altars.
- Arch of da Vila: the solemn city gate opens the way to the Old Town; behind it is preserved the ancient Moorish horseshoe portal, a rare detail for Portugal.
- Municipal Museum of Faro in the former monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin: a quiet courtyard with arcades, Roman mosaics and the history of the city from antiquity to sailors.
- Carmelite Church and Chapel of Bones: the walls of the chapel are lined with human bones and skulls — a discreet reminder of the transience and power of faith.
It is interesting to know:
- The Ria Formosa Natural Park is recognized as one of the seven natural wonders of Portugal.
- Storks choose Faro for nesting: their nests are often seen on bell towers and lanterns, and the city protects them.
This route gives a gentle rhythm of discoveries: from stone arches and museum halls to palm trees on the promenade — perfect to experience Faro by taste, sight and touch.
