La storia di Lutsk ha circa mille anni. Un tempo era la capitale del principato della Galizia-Volyn e la residenza del Granduca Lubart, che costruì il famoso castello di Lutsk. Per molto tempo la città è stata un importante centro di Volyn. Per qualche tempo la famiglia Kosach visse in città con la figlia, ora conosciuta come Lesja Ukrainka.
