La date de fondation de la ville est inconnue. La première mention de la colonie de Ploskyriv remonte à 1431. Au cours de sa longue histoire, la ville a fait partie du Grand-Duché de Lituanie et de Russie, de la République populaire de Pologne, des empires ottoman et russe. Au cours de son séjour dans le cadre de ce dernier, son nom a été changé en Proskurov. Pendant les compétitions de libération, le gouvernement de l'UNR et la Direction se sont retrouvés à plusieurs reprises à Proskurov. En 1954, la ville a reçu son nom moderne, en l'honneur du remarquable hetman ukrainien Bohdan Khmelnytsky. La ville regorge de sites intéressants qui valent le détour. L'itinéraire comprend le jardin botanique de KHNU, la philharmonie régionale, la cathédrale Saint-Pokrovski, la maison des Zhuravlov et la place de l'Indépendance.
