Se desconoce la fecha de fundación de la ciudad. La primera mención del asentamiento de Ploskyriv se remonta a 1431. Durante su larga historia, la ciudad formó parte del Gran Ducado de Lituania y Rusia, la República Popular de Polonia y los imperios otomano y ruso. Durante su estancia como parte de este último, su nombre cambió a Proskurov. Durante las competiciones de liberación, el gobierno de la UNR y la Dirección estuvieron ubicados repetidamente en Proskurov. En 1954, la ciudad recibió su nombre moderno, en honor al destacado hetman ucraniano Bohdan Khmelnytsky. Hay muchos lugares interesantes en la ciudad que vale la pena ver.
